Best Windproof Cycling Jacket Buyers Guide

windproof cycling jacket buyers guideSince Fall is rapidly approaching I thought it would be nice to start looking for a new cycling jacket for myself. It turns out there are about a million options when it comes to cycling jackets. For Fall I have decided that I wanted a windproof specific jacket. These jackets are a great mix of warmth and breathability for chilly morning and evening rides. The fabric they are made out of keeps the chill wind from whistling through to your body and often offer some water resistance.

I have selected the best windproof cycling jackets I could find and assembled a buyers guide for fellow riders. These jackets are all cycling specific with a closer fit, ventilation, moisture management, and other key cycling specific features. These can easily be combined with a jersey and other types of base layers to adjust the warmth you need for your riding conditions.

Features To Look For In Cycling Jackets:

  • Longer sleeves that don’t creep up when in the drops
  • Longer rear tail of jacket to cover your bum while riding
  • Zippered ventilation areas to adjust cooling or warmth
  • Helps to find a jacket with some water-resistance to make the jacket more versatile
  • Reflective details so drivers can see you in low light
  • Bright colored jackets make you more visible to drivers as well
  • Taller collars keep your neck warm
  • Tighter fitting jackets don’t flap in the wind as much
  • Be careful of sizing. You will probably want to run a size larger than your jersey, especially for those of us used to American sizing
  • Pockets are just as useful in a jacket as a jersey, I always look for ones that are zippered.

Rider Reviews:

“It works well in wind and light rain, although it is not waterproof. It is very light and comfortable, fits well and keeps you warm around the neck, easy zip for ventilation on climbs. I have owned for 2 years and as good as new. If you had to take 1 jacket for winter, this is it.”

“Although it is very expensive, the jacket is thinner, warmer, more breathable and more water resistant than the other jackets I have. I really feel the cold but with 2 base layers on underneath this will keep me warm in 0-3C temperatures but does not overheat if the temperature peaks at 8-9C.”

“Bought this jacket for the cold commuting morning and evenings in Melbourne. Tested in 3C-10C so far, regulates body temperature incredibly well – some serious high tech fabrics and construction here. When I first tried on it seemed too tight, but on the bike it clicks into position – you barely notice it, perfect with a long sleeve base layer. Forget the price, buy it, you won’t be disappointed, this will become another assos classic.”

“Great product – performs as expected – quality, fit, utility. Ideal for spring temps from 45 to 60.”

“Love it. Wasn’t sweating profusely, conforms nicely, looks good, dries quickly, very pleased with the product. The windblocker panels kept me warm even while the winds picked up, making my feet jealous of my torso and arms.”

“This jacket performs very well in 40-45 degree range. I wear a light base layer with this jacket and stay very comfortable. The jacket does a good job of pulling moisture away from the bass layer, keeping you feeling dry. This jacket is a good choice for those rides where the effort constantly fluctuates. The vents help regulate heat during the high efforts and the there is just enough insulation to keep you warm during the periods of easier riding.”

“ridden with it at least 10 times and in temps down to 30F, in light (freezing) rain, and wind. It keeps my upper body warmer than any other piece I own.”

“great in cold conditions from 10-40 degrees. I have been out in weather as cold as 10 degrees and do not feel the wind or cold weather in this jacket. Above 40 degrees and you might overheat in this jacket.”

“I have tested this coat in temps ranging from 30’s to 50’s and in wind conditions blowing 20+. It will meet all of your expectations of what a cold weather jacket should provide. I have had no issues with staying warm or the wind penetrating through. In the 30’s i wear a winter jersey and a base layer. In the 40’s I wear it with a long sleeve base layer. When you get into the 50’s this jacket Is almost too warm. Vents would be a great feature to add to help with over heating.”

“Material may appear cheap and delicate but it is designed this way to make it lightweight therefore if you’re too hot u may fold this up and put it in your pocket. Used this for the first time in Australian winter 6C on a windy morning I was amazed the jacket kept me warm throughout and deflected any wind. The mesh material beneath the armpit releases hot air build up inside for extra comfort.”

“Light, comfortable and keeps out the windchill. I have used it when cool with a thermal base layer underneath and also when mild, with just a short sleeved top – either way, it was just the job”

Rider Reviews:

“Very warm, even at 32 F/0 C. It’s too warm for anything above 65 F, but you can wear it at that temperature as a long sleeve jersey (with nothing underneath) and just open the chest and arm vents.

It’s snug, but the size chart is accurate. I especially like that the arms are longer than usual, so they don’t ride up when you’re in position on the bike. The fourth “secure” pocket (has a zipper) is a nice touch. I don’t have to worry about my keys, phone, wallet falling out.”

“The first ride was 4 hours with temperature from 20F to 30F and strong wind up to 20mph. I wore a craft base layer an this jacket. It was just perfect not cold and not too warm.”

Rider Reviews:

“This is a lovely piece of clothing. It is superbly made, well-fitting but stretchy. The long arms cover your wrists well. The closely-weaved fabric looks as though it should shrug off light rain, but obviously it isn’t cut like a cycling cape, so it won’t do the same job in a downpour. The zip pulls are nice and chunky, so are easy to find, and shouldn’t snag on your technical base-layers. There is a useful amount of reflective material, and the contrast of the black & white panels should make you more conspicuous, which is generally a good thing for a cyclist amongst cars”

“This is a great top. Excellent quality, comfortable & flexible, stylish and versatile. The kind of top you love to put on when going out for a ride.

This may seem expensive to some but you are getting a quality product. It does a great job of keeping out the wind and cold on chillier rides with only a long sleeve baselayer on underneath. In short it looks great, feels great and is very well made.”

Novara Headwind Jacket (buy here)

  • Chin guard and windblock gusset
  • Rear zipped pockets

Rider Reviews:

“This is a nice jacket and does a good job of keeping out the wind. Despite its weight, it keeps me warm. I found the fit on the sleeves and chest a little tight, but not uncomfortably so.”

“As for the wind-stopping properties: magical. Simply magical. When they say 60mph winds, they mean 60mph winds. I can ride all day any day with this jacket and still get the best workout without worrying about how cold it is outside. And yet, it breathes exquisitely from the back panels. Good sized (zipper!) pockets in the back that overlap with two different sizes for all your goodies and the chest pocket is well-placed for keys and smaller items.”

“I’ve used this product in temperatures down to 25 degrees and up to 61. Under 38 I put on a pair of sleeve warmers under it and it’s perfect, while above 48 I have to open the collar or even unzip it further but it bleeds heat well enough that I don’t overheat (and I’m an oven, overheating is my primary issue on the bike). The windproof front panels are awesome and perfectly placed. Wherever it doesn’t need to be windproofed it has a very breathable fabric which helps to regulate temperature. I was worried it would not have enough windproof panels, but that turned out to not be the case at all.”

  • Thermastretch contrast fabric construction
  • 4 elastic storage pockets
  • 1 zipped security pocket
  • Reflective print details and piping
  • Full YKK front zipper

Rider Reviews:

“I was looking for a windproof jacket that would be bright enough to be seen but not make me look like a dayglo cycling gnome. After a lot of searching, this caught my eye as it was not orange all over, but enough colour to be seen on the roads. It was a bit over my budget but after reading other reviews I was sold. Definitely better looking than the competition – I mountain bike as well as road bike and I could wear it for either without embarrassment. My first worries were that as only the front panels were windproof, it might get a bit chilly. However, my inaugural ride was at 0 to -1 degree with a stiff breeze and it did the job admirably. It was nice and snug and, even better, I did not have to unzip the front during serious efforts uphill. I anticipate that on a warmer day, with fewer layers underneath it can keep the wind out without turning into a sauna.”

“Well made, and nicely windproof. Like the bits that loop over the thumbs and stops draughts from going up your arms.”

“brilliant jacket, finally a windproof that doesnt flap and slap like a tesco bag. i it doesnt pack as small as my former jacket (mavic helium) but i wouldnt use anything else now.”

“I’ve got the blue one and it looks very stylish, feels great on and packs very small. I wouldn’t say it is very rain resistant as the sleeves start to cling to bare arms pretty quickly – but it still keeps the chill off and dries quickly so is normally more use than a full mac.”
